An Example of Why I Enjoy Teaching

In one of my graduate classes I teach at the University of Maryland University College, we had a question thread this week relating to the Internet of Every/Any Thing  asking students to imagine new ideas that they hadn’t read about.

This resulted in the following on-line exchange:

Student 1:

Remember the mood ring? It supposedly told you how you felt by responding to your body temperature. Only thing is, even if it accurately assessed your mood, it didn’t actually do anything for you…until now.

Internet-of-Mood (IoM) has swept the nation. Forget Google and Apple watches, get yourself an IoM Band and watch it not only accurately sense your mood but also do something about it. IoM devices integrate to provide you a custom experience.

Here’s how it works: the IoM Band senses your mood and through wireless technology, communicates with your smartphone to configure the right music playlist to match your blues or your need to cruise. Your smart home can also communicate with your IoM Band to respond to your arrival in the right way; if you’re feeling down, the smart home dims the lights and puts on a comedy on TV. If you’re tired, your phone is silenced and soothing music is played throughout the house. Woke up late for work and are now in a rush? The Band warms your shower water and starts the car for you.

Get your IoM Band today!

Me (attempting to be funny):

We need the Internet of Telling Us What Our Spouse Is Angry About (with the premium service telling us what to buy/do to get out of trouble).

Student 2 (actually being funny):

Good idea, professor.  Until then, I’ll be sleeping on the Internet-of-Couch.
